Here is the paradox of the application essay: the single most valuable quality it can have \u2014 an authentic voice \u2014 is often the first casualty of the process. Add deadlines, parental hovering, competitive folklore, and a teenager’s conviction that their real life is unimpressive, and the result is paint-by-numbers essays. FYI: not every admission reader is looking for a Pollock or Picasso but they are all bored of paint-by-numbers.<\/p>\n

I help students write applications that sound like them. That say something real about who they are, what they care about and what they plan to do with it. I don’t endorse more polished versions of what they think admissions wants; instead, I coach them to articulate what makes them them.<\/p>\n

Writing authentically under pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n

Application season is competitive, and pressure does strange things to writing. Capable students freeze, or overwrite, or sand every interesting edge off their own story in pursuit of an imagined “correct” essay. Perfectionism \u2014 that old friend \u2014 convinces them that draft one must be brilliant, so draft one never arrives.<\/p>\n

My job is to help them decompress safely. We work in a calm, low-pressure environment where they can think out loud, try things, and be wrong on the way to being right. First we find the story worth telling \u2014 usually not the one the student assumes, and almost never the one that sounds like a trophy cabinet. Then we build it, draft by draft, at a pace that leaves time for the essay to become good, not just done.<\/p>\n

Amplifying the student’s voice<\/span><\/h2>\n

The essay must sound like the student. Every word. I don’t write, rewrite, or dictate \u2014 I coach. I ask the questions that surface the real material, help structure the telling, and give feedback on the drafts (25-plus years as a professional writer and editor means the feedback is specific, not vibes). What emerges is the student’s voice, clarified, glowing in its best light.<\/p>\n

One of my students started off with a boilerplate draft about a piano recital, or something. After brainstorming, she pivoted (rather bravely) to write about her love of manicures. Galvanized, the essay gained personality, color and wit — and gained her a ‘yes’ from Dartmouth.<\/p>\n

Students have used our work together to develop the clarity and confidence to express their authentic self in applications. NB: admissions decisions themselves depend on many factors no coach controls, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling something.<\/p>\n

The neurodivergent advantage we should talk about more<\/span><\/h2>\n

Much of what’s written about neurodivergent students and applications is framed as damage control. I’d like to push back on that, hard.<\/p>\n

Admissions readers spend their days wading through essays that all sound the same, because most applicants are trying to sound like each other. A student who has spent four years obsessed with medieval siege engines, or who experiences the world at an unusual angle and can describe it, or whose honesty hasn’t yet been ironed flat by social convention \u2014 that student has raw material most applicants would kill for. Depth of interest, originality of perspective, and a distinctive voice are what the generic essay lacks. Many of my neurodivergent students don’t need to overcome their profile in an application. They need help mining it.<\/p>\n

Whether and how to disclose neurodivergence in an application is a personal decision, and there is no automatic right answer. What I offer is a thinking partner: we work through what the student wants to say, what serves the story, and what they’re comfortable sharing \u2014 and the choice to disclose stays theirs and their family’s.<\/p>\n
