But ask them to write it down, and the struggle begins. Instead of fluent prose, and you get avoidance, agony, or a document containing one heroic sentence and the cursor of despair.

When bright kids struggle to write, it is confusing for parents, teachers — and them. Adults look at the gap between the talking and the writing and conclude the problem is laziness, carelessness, not trying. Gifted and twice-exceptional (2E) students may, sadly, conclude they “just aren’t good” at writing. The truth is stranger and kinder. Talking and writing are different beasts. Most children acquire their native language(s) without instruction; buoyed by interaction, conversation seems to scaffold itself, the rules of grammar absorb as effortlessly as UV rays. Spoken language rides the currents of mutual assumption and pragmatic shortcuts — smiles, nods, eye rolls carry much of the weight of meaning.
Writing is a recent invention — it took intelligent, verbal humans millennia to come up with it — and it is a solo sport. No nodding listener. No clarifying questions. Just the writer, alone, doing everything.

What’s actually happening cognitively

To construct even one comprehensible paragraph, a writer must focus on the main point, retrieve relevant ideas, sequence them, choose words, construct sentences, spell, punctuate, monitor whether the sentence on the page matches the sentence in the head, and suppress infinite distractions. It is cognitive circus act involving fire and flying objects.

Contrary to what myth, giftedness can make this harder, not easier. Bright kids that struggle to write tend to have big ideas; complex, racing ideas that want to be everywhere at once. Often, they spin and swerve out of the student’s reach. The richer the thinking, the harder it is to compress into a finite sentence. A student who settles on an idea can usually marshal it into an orderly piece of writing; when ideas are arching and crackling like fireworks, there are endless possibilities for chaos. With gifted and 2E students, the blank page is a paradoxical result of their abundant intellect.

Another challenge is high standards becoming barriers to effort. Bright students may be highly attuned to good writing. They want to write well, but haven’t yet acquired the tools and strategies to meet their expectations. Because they rarely see writing modelled, they may assume that their imperfect attempts arise from lack of talent, rather than lack of practice.

Writing is where executive function goes to be tested

Writing is the most executive-function-intensive academic task school. Full stop. Planning, initiating, sequencing, sustaining attention, self-monitoring, revising, formatting, presenting — an essay demands every skill on the executive function list, simultaneously, with no natural break points.

Young people with executive function difficulties — i.e., most gifted, ADHD, autistic, and otherwise twice-exceptional students — will often hit the wall at writing, even as their reading, discussion, and test scores flourish.

Writing struggles don’t reveal a knowledge problem, they reveal a production problem. Write requires dedicated tools. Crucially, tools that can be built through empathetic, attuned coaching.

What good writing support looks like

Bright kids who struggle to write do not need grammar worksheets, or another explanation of five-paragraph essay structure. Meaningful support for gifted and twice-exceptional (2E) profiles:

Breaks writing into its actual component skills — capturing ideas, planning, sequencing, drafting, revising — and finds where, precisely, this student’s pipeline jams.

Separates thinking from transcribing. Talk first, map second, write third. The ideas get out of working memory and onto neutral ground before sentence construction begins.

Makes starting small. Not “write the essay” but “write three bad sentences about the middle bit.” The blank page loses most of its menace when the first move is deliberately unimportant.

Treats drafts as drafts. Exceptional students need explicit, repeated permission and modelling for the fact that professional writers produce terrible first drafts on purpose.

Happens in a calm, low-pressure environment where anxious students can work without fear of judgment. Shame is the enemy of output. Always.

Respects the student’s ideas. This is sophisticated writing development for a capable mind, not remediation with a gentler font.

How to help at home

Be the nodding listener. Let them talk the essay at you before they write it — you are the scaffolding speech evolved to use.

Ask them to tell you the point in one sentence; write it on a sticky note; that’s the thesis, captured before the traffic jam.

Praise effort, not the end result.

And retire the word “just,” as in “just write it down” — if it were just, they would have.

When to seek specialist support

If the gap between thinking and writing is persistent, widening, or starting to corrode your child’s confidence — if they’ve begun saying “I’m bad at English” when what they mean is “writing hurts” — it’s worth seeking support. A writing teacher who understands this profile can change the trajectory quickly, because the underlying ability was never missing.

If you suspect an additional challenge such as dyslexia or a processing difference, a qualified specialist assessment can clarify the picture; I’m an educator, not a clinician, and I work alongside families, schools, and any specialist support already in place.

Teaching & academic coaching
About — Cila’s story
When Smart isn’t Enough: Why Bright Students Struggle in School

FAQ

My child reads constantly. Shouldn’t that make them a good writer?
Reading builds vocabulary, knowledge of structure, and taste. It doesn’t build the production machinery: planning, sequencing, drafting, finishing. Heavy readers with writing struggles are common precisely because their standards outrun their output skills.

Is this dysgraphia or a learning difference?
It might be, and it might simply be the executive-function-meets-writing collision described above. Only a qualified specialist can assess a learning difference. Either way, the practical support looks similar: break the task down, reduce shame, address the specific sticking point.

Why can my child write pages about their own interests but nothing for school?
Interest is rocket fuel for executive function — it lowers the cost of starting and sustains attention for free. School topics arrive without the fuel; they require executive function skills that may be underdeveloped. The skills transfer; they just have to be built.

Will my child grow out of it?
Will they learn to drive a car without instruction? Or pick up jazz piano by ear? Perhaps, but don’t bet on it.

How long does it take to improve?
It varies by student and by the individual challenge. Small, morale-changing shifts — starting without a standoff, finishing a paragraph without a crisis — often come early.
