First up: Writing tips

Have you ever noticed that most writing advice starts with a blank page?

Is there anything more terrifying?

I’ve been writing for publication for more than 25 years and a blank page still gives me the fear. No wonder most young (and older) people would rather do almost anything than write.

But write we must. Those of us who are past the age of school reports, essay tests and college applications face emails, proposals and work projects.

So let’s take it easy on ourselves.

Instead of demanding perfection of a blank page, let’s take that imperfect essay, email or report and make it better.

Decades of editing have taught me that a few simple tricks can improve even the most uneven writing. Think of it as house cleaning.

Tidying, vacuuming and picking up the dirty laundry won’t turn a double-wide into
a mansion, but it will make it a hundred times more welcoming.

It’s the same with writing. Identify clutter. Tidy it away. Voila: a welcoming space.

Over the next five weeks, I’ll share five tips that I guarantee will improve any piece of writing — all without typing a word.
