Initially, I chose it for A) its slimness and B) because it is a rare use of the sustained second-person literary point of view (POV).<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading and rereading it with the kids, I gained a deep appreciation of Kincaid\u2019s coruscating insights on colonialism, education and the universality of self-deception.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was it a challenging read for 13 and 14-year-olds?<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely. Which they tackled with aplomb. <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>One of my core values as an educator is to respect students enough to push them. <\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They deserve to be challenged: they face a challenging world. Appropriately designed and presented learning challenges give them a secure opportunity to explore the unfamiliar and tackle intractable problems.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1527354490195-9abc2e0b93cb?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyfHxhbnRpZ3VhfGVufDB8fHx8MTY5ODMzNDIzOXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"body of water near mountain and houses\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The big idea<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonialism never ended, Kincaid argues, it just got a self-actualizing makeover.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf you go to Antigua as a tourist\u2026 this is what you will see\u2026. Since you are a tourist, a North American or European \u2013 to be frank, white \u2013 and not an Antiguan black\u2026 with cardboard boxes of much needed cheap clothes and food for relatives, you move through customs swiftly\u2026 your bags are not searched\u2026 you emerge from customs into the hot, clean air: immediately you feel cleansed, immediately you feel blessed (which is to say special); you feel free.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By turns ruthless and resigned \u2013 almost compassionate \u2013 Kincaid explicates the myriad ways in which the white tourist\u2019s (any white tourist\u2019s) sense of freedom is planking thrown over a historical quicksand of exploitation.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA tourist is an ugly human being,\u201d she writes, in the tone of a kindly physician breaking bad news. \u201cYou are not an ugly person ordinarily\u2026 From day to day, you are a nice person.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <em>niceness<\/em> is not a palliative for those living in the ruins of a past they did not choose. Good intentions may have paved the roads, but they raised hell.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1591348541453-8db8a6985893?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8YW50aWd1YXxlbnwwfHx8fDE2OTgzMzQyMzl8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"brown concrete building near green trees under blue sky during daytime\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although written, as Kincaid notes in the preface, as a letter to William Shawn \u2013 her editor at <em>The New Yorker<\/em> (and, later, father-in-law) \u2013 it is hard to imagine she didn\u2019t expect a larger audience. Much like Oscar Wilde\u2019s prison letter <em>De Profundis<\/em>, her letter\u2019s ferocious artistry and moral acuity burns to be witnessed.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A Small Place <\/em>zooms out to give a glimpse of Antigua\u2019s history: \u201cWe lived on a street named after an English maritime criminal, Horatio Nelson, and all the other streets around us were named after some other English maritime criminals.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education, like the built environment, was shaped (warped is perhaps the more accurate word) by colonialism. The young Northern Irish headmistress, Kincaid recalls, \u201ctold these girls over and over again to stop behaving as if they were monkeys just out of trees.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kincaid\u2019s point is less about racism, ipso facto, than about the impossible psychological position of the colonized under colonization; of the unfree in any system of exclusion or apartheid.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cNo one ever dreamt that the word for any of this was racism&#8230; We thought these people were so ill-mannered\u2026 We thought they were un-Christian-like; we thought they were small-minded; we thought they were like animals, a bit below human standards as we understood those standards to be. We felt superior to all these people; we thought that perhaps the English among them who behaved this way weren\u2019t English at all, for the English were supposed to be civilised, and this behaviour was so much like that of an animal, the thing we were before the English rescued us, that maybe they weren\u2019t from the real England at all but from another England, one we were not familiar with.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mental contortions required of the citizens of a small, subjugated place are as corrosive as colonial violence is destructive. Antigua was no longer a colony when Kincaid was writing, but it blundered under the burdens of the past.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>J\u2019accuse<\/em>: \u201cHave you ever wondered to yourself why it is that all people like me seem to have learnt from you is how to imprison and murder each other, how to govern badly, and how to take the wealth of our country and place it in Swiss bank accounts?\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1612825149329-eac215c29255?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw3fHxhbnRpZ3VhfGVufDB8fHx8MTY5ODMzNDIzOXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"red black and white star flag\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easy conclusion, lest you jump, is not where Kincaid arrives; she leads the reader someplace simultaneously damning and hopeful:<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce you cease to be a master, once you throw off your master\u2019s yoke, you are no longer human rubbish, you are just a human being, and all the things that adds up to. So, too, with the slaves. Once they are no longer slaves, once they are free, they are no longer noble and exalted; they are just human beings.\u201d<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My take<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonialism, racism and the legacies of oppression are alive and operational, making <em>A Small Place <\/em>as politically relevant and urgent in 2023 as it was in 1988. It is striking proof that one can wholly condemn subjugation without denying the agency of the subjugated.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kincaid\u2019s perspective and use of language make her polemic a literary delight.
