{"id":144307750,"date":"2024-05-07T07:00:37","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T07:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/parents-vs-social-media\/"},"modified":"2024-05-07T07:00:37","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T07:00:37","slug":"parents-vs-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/hi\/parents-vs-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents vs Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to win the war<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my students is putting persuasive writing to real-world use \u2014 they\u2019re trying to get their parents to let them use SnapChat.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This emerged as an issue a few weeks ago, in a discussion of informative writing. Their pitch on that occasion bore no fruit.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, they\u2019ve moved into full-fledged persuasive essay territory, they are reinforcing the argument to make a second attempt.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1676345406998-459a27369b83?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw3fHx0ZWVuJTIwY2VsbHBob25lfGVufDB8fHx8MTcxNDgzOTg1NHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"a person standing in a field looking at a cell phone\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Each party is stuck in a justified subjectivity:<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><p>My student feels that without access to the app \u2018all my friends use\u2019 they\u2019re socially isolated and missing out.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Their parents (as told by them) are worried that images and words entrusted to social media exist forever, making too high-stakes a game of teen banter. <\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My reflexive sympathy for his parents\u2019 stance is weighed against specific and general caveats. Re the former, they are (at least on the evidence of our interactions) a good-natured, well-adjusted thoughtful young person. <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>As for the latter, grown-up efforts to prohibit social media reek <br\/>of Canute-versus-waves levels of futility.<\/p><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teen social media use<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pew Research Center study \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/60dbccad6982cc755051e419\/t\/65a777ef0559e36ff366dc23\/1705474032737\/Teens%2C+Social+Media+and+Technology+2023.pdf\">Teens, Social Media and Technology<\/a> 2023\u2019 reports that about 33% of teens are on one of the top five social media sites \u2014 YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, SnapChat and Facebook \u2018almost constantly\u2019. And 46% are online \u2018almost constantly\u2019.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1451257\/us-teens-hours-spent-social-networks-per-day\/\">Statistia<\/a>, this amounts to about five hours per day on social media.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can well-intentioned adults compete with that? <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simple fact is, we can\u2019t. Just saying no never works: see also, Prohibition, the War on Drugs that isn\u2019t the band, abstinence-only education, etc.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>my<\/em> perfect world, smartphones would be licensed and restricted to over-16s, or maybe over-18s, if for no other reason than if a body is too young to go into an adult bookshop, they don\u2019t need free, 24\/7 access to online hardcore. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this world is neither mine nor anybody else\u2019s idea of perfect. So. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1466975656732-e70d9b542a09?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzMnx8d2F0ZXIlMjBwaXBlfGVufDB8fHx8MTcxNDg0NDU2MXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"grey concrete building\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Channeling <\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canute\u2019s problem with the waves was that water does not acknowledge obstacles; it moves around them. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to put a hard stop on social media use is about the same: youthful energy will simply find another way.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What one <em>can <\/em>do with water is channel it.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edward Dolnick\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Writing-of-the-Gods\/Edward-Dolnick\/9781501198946\">Writing of the Gods: The Race to Decode the Rosetta Stone<\/a>, <\/em>which I read this week and tremendously enjoyed, centers on the rivalry between two would-be deciphers of Napoleon\u2019s most famous stolen object: Brit Thomas Young and Frenchman Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Champollion. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former was a Renaissance-man type who made astonishing scientific breakthroughs in multiple fields; the latter was, not to put too fine a point on it, a massive Egypt nerd. Champollion was obsessed with the land of the Pharaohs and preemptively taught himself Coptic, a moribund language that was, nonetheless, the nearest relative to ancient Egyptian. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spoiler alert: it was Champollion who cracked the hieroglyph code. He was, arguably, less clever than Young, certainly less confident and less well-funded, but he channeled all the passion and energy of his 41-year life into Egypt and so happened to make one of the great linguistic breakthroughs in all of history. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preoccupations <\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does this bear on social media? <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bear with me. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can\u2019t conjure more Rosetta Stones. But we can \u2014 teachers, parents, grown-ups of the world \u2014 make a conscious effort to foster kids\u2019 healthy preoccupations. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mine was reading and writing. Look where that got me.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My brother\u2019s was messing with a Commodore 64; he\u2019s a six-figure programmer. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anecdotally, my students who seem happiest are those with active preoccupations: flute, swimming, robotics. What it is hardly matters; what\u2019s striking is how they light up when they talk about what they love. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balancing act<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I\u2019ve observed is that too often extracurriculars become another box to tick with eyes glued to the so-called prize of eventual college admissions or some such.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not a preoccupation make (except maybe for parents). Some of the dullest, most jaded-seeming teens I\u2019ve met have CVs that put mine to shame \u2014 but they are so painfully aware that every move is being watched, weighed and measured for its \u2018benefit\u2019 that they, quite reasonably, cannot see these activities as anything but another chore. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the flip side, genuine preoccupations are often dismissed or undervalued because they\u2019re not \u2018productive\u2019. I was astonished to learn one of my students is an accomplished competitive show-jumper. She\u2019d never thought to mention it because she didn\u2019t see it as relevant to her education. Shame on education.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1523138251108-2c58a1ec170f?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMnx8dGVlbnMlMjBvdXRkb29yfGVufDB8fHx8MTcxNDg0NTQ1N3ww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"group of people jogging on green field during daytime\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reimagining education <\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conventional model of education: sit in school, or at a computer, for six to nine hours a day, having information about disparate subjects fired at you in 45-60 minute chunks \u2014 is breathtakingly stupid. No wonder the gifted and imaginative struggle. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it any wonder social media is teens\u2019 drug of choice? <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lest anyone panic, I\u2019m not arguing for less school. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3102\/0034654310377086\">Patall, et al. (2010)<\/a> reviewed 15 studies on the consequences of expanding school hours and they found that, overall,  extending school time supported learning, especially for at-risk students. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I am arguing for is thinking hard about how time is allocated within the school day\/year, and reimagining education as a holistic experience that fosters intellectual, physical, social, emotional and even spiritual growth. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would put an end to seven classes a day with 30 minutes for lunch, followed by a mad dash to the playing field or club HQ. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surely, with all science has to say about neurodevelopment, all history has to say about society and culture, all psychology has to say about individuals, all research has to say about effective teaching strategies\u2026 we could do better.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home school families have a huge opportunity; private and independent schools have a huge opportunity; families using blended or online learning have huge opportunities \u2014 if they\u2019re alert to make the most of them. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build the channel<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the amazing opportunities of holistic education is giving students access to an array of potential preoccupations. <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>Maybe they\u2019ll discover they love pole-vaulting, cell biology, engraving, guitar, horticulture. <\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of being treated as either a) resume-fodder or b) a distraction, these preoccupations could be integrated into student\u2019s learning pathways. They could be taken seriously as an important interest and lightly as another aspect of the curricula.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When interviewing winemakers for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriftbooks.com\/w\/oregon-wine-pioneers_cila-s-warncke\/14511248\/\">Oregon Wine Pioneers<\/a><\/em>, I was struck by how many of them had come to wine from other fields \u2014 medicine, economics, education, psychology. But these weren\u2019t blind veers. Digging deeper, it transpired that beneath their academic and professional credentials lay preoccupations rooted in family histories: parents and grandparents who tended, made wine, cultivated gardens. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These pioneering winemakers had allowed themselves to be drawn back to these loves. They\u2019d had the courage to step away from socially approved occupations to embrace their preoccupations. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let the water find its level<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, all my student\u2019s attention is on (lack of) SnapChat.
