{"id":150559177,"date":"2024-10-29T08:02:02","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T08:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/writers-read-bird-by-bird\/"},"modified":"2024-10-29T08:02:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T08:02:02","slug":"writers-read-bird-by-bird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/es\/writers-read-bird-by-bird\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer&#039;s Read: Bird by Bird"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anne Lamott, 1994<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key words<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing, writer\u2019s craft, creative writing, narrative writing, writing teacher, books about writing, writer\u2019s life, personal writing, writing for beginners<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/79b90b60-7852-4ed9-8b67-863fa3ac1daa_630x1000.jpeg?w=310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"bird by bird {Bird by Bird}: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne  Lamott (Sep 1, 1995) (BIRD BY BIRD)\" \/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, I <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-150269323?r=3svop&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web\">wrote about Steve Almond\u2019s shiny new tome <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-150269323?r=3svop&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web\">Truth is the Arrow<\/a>, Mercy is the Bow<\/em> \u2014 which could have been the title of a chapter in <em>Bird by Bird, <\/em>its 30-year-old predecessor in the uplifting-chat-about-writing space. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(My money is on Almond being as much a staple in 2054 as Lamott is in 2024.) <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a desultory series of writer interviews, I asked my subjects to mention a favorite book about writing. The title that came up again and again was <em>Bird by Bird<\/em>. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even without those endorsements, it would make any honest list of \u2018books I live by\u2019. Although I gifted my dog-eared copy to a student a couple of years back, passages are engraved on my brain, just waiting for a glance from the mind\u2019s eye. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1579762715118-a6f1d4b934f1?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw2fHxiaXJkc3xlbnwwfHx8fDE3Mjk3NjUyODF8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"brown and black bird on green plant\" width=\"372\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Easy to love, easy to hate<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a book so near-unanimously feted it prompted a reddit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/writing\/comments\/z1ewj9\/am_i_the_only_person_who_doesnt_like_bird_by_bird\/\">\/am_i_the_only_person_who_doesnt_like_bird_by_bird<\/a> \u2014 which discussion makes is amusing and not irrelevant reading.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><p>\u201cIt barely says anything about writing, it&#8217;s full of weird metaphors and clunky prose, and it feels like an unedited memior [sic].\u201d<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u201cIt felt like an amateur&#8217;s blog about writing.\u201d<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u201cAll the religious stuff in it really turned me off. It was among the books my mom bought me to try to &#8220;bring me back to the church&#8221; or whatever.\u201d<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these comments are untrue. Truthfully, the last has always troubled me because I have trouble reconciling faith in imaginary beings with the acuity required to write thought-provoking prose. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, Flannery O\u2019Connor was a determined Catholic but she was also FLANNERY O\u2019CONNOR and, to borrow a line from Depeche Mode, seemed comfortable with the idea that God had a sick sense of humor. Lamott is not Flannery O\u2019Connor, and her God doesn\u2019t seem to have a sense of humor.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, <em>Bird by Bird<\/em> is beloved, not least by me. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s its secret? <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1606585333304-a7fa1ca4376c?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzNXx8YnJvY2NvbGl8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzI5NzcwNzA2fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"green broccoli in close up photography\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broccoli, Birds and KFKD<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although divided into four predictable-enough sections:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><p>Writing<\/p><\/li><li><p>The Writing Frame of Mind<\/p><\/li><li><p>Help Along the Way<\/p><\/li><li><p>Publication \u2014 and Other Reasons to Write <\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is little conventional about the approach and tone. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the reddit detractors the advice \u201clisten to your broccoli\u201d came in for special notice. It is, as Lamott acknowledges, a crib from Mel Brooks. But from there she veers into how \u201cso many of us lost access to our broccoli when we were children\u201d because their parents wouldn\u2019t tell them the truth, or acknowledge the truth and <\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou nodded, even though you knew these were lies, because it was important to stay on the adults\u2019 good side\u2026 if you questioned them too adamantly, you\u2019d probably get sent to your room without dinner, or they\u2019d drive a stake through your ankles and leave you on the hillside above the Mobil station.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is so loopy and so damn <em>specific<\/em> that, like it or not, the image of a hobbled child withering in the cold above a blood-red winged horse will be with you forever. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image is so vivid it might detract from the author\u2019s point. Or serve to obscure the fact the point isn\u2019t that sharp. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then Lamott says something like, <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>\u201cPerfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. <br\/>It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life.\u201d<\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And anyone who has ever felt a little bad, a little stressed about the quality of their writing \u2014 which is everyone who has ever written \u2014 smiles in recognition and murmurs, <em>go on, sister. <\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1465161191540-aac346fcbaff?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw2fHxwaWN0dXJlJTIwZnJhbWV8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzI5Nzc3NTYzfDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"assorted-color wooden frames\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What practical advice Lamott does dispense, between riffs on broccoli, is useful and grass-burr sticky. Her one-inch frame is probably the most renowned piece of tiny stationary in contemporary craft literature: <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>It reminds me that all I have to do is to write down as much as I can see through <br\/>a one-inch picture frame. This is all I have to bite off for the time being.<\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another much-highlighted outtake is from section two, The Writing Frame of Mind, in which she urgently advises writers to tune out radio station KFKD.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If you are not careful, station KFKD will play in your head twenty-four hours a day, nonstop, in stereo. Out of the right speaker in your inner ear will come the endless stream of self-aggrandizement, the recitation of one\u2019s specialness, of how much more open and gifted and brilliant and knowing and misunderstood and humble one is. Out of the left speaker will be the rap songs of self-loathing, the lists of all the things one doesn\u2019t do well, of all the mistakes one has made\u2026 the doubt, the assertion that everything that one touches turns to shit.<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with stake-through-ankles, even if you don\u2019t see yourself in this picture (but I guess most writers do) the words snap like pennants in her breezy prose. They accomplish what writers crave \u2014 and therefore envy \u2014 ease and memorability. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My take<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Bird by Bird<\/em> is endearing, and enduring, for its unapologetic quirkiness and unflagging optimism. It will be awful, this writing thing, Lamott repeats, in so many words, and in so many more words. But it will also be precious and empowering and meaningful in ways no one who loves it can adequately explain. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of time, writers just need to hear that what they are doing is <em>something<\/em> in a world prone to asking, with furrowed brow: \u201cHow do you make a living at that?\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lamott is the ideal companion for clogged-washing-machine days and white-bread-and-margarine days. Writing won\u2019t mop your floor, or add one iota of nutrient value to that dozenth slice, but it will empower you to tell your own story.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their take<\/h3><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cLamott is anything but earnest. She is a class A smart aleck, a relentless smart aleck in the fine tradition of J.D. Salinger.<\/p><p>This is delicious icing on the cake in the practical passages about how to write. It\u2019s kind of unnecessary in the passages about oneness and compassion.
