Ctrl+f Delete: The secret to better writing<\/h2>

My favorite literary gibe of all time is Truman Capote on Jack Kerouac: <\/p>

\u201cThat\u2019s not writing, that\u2019s typing.\u201d<\/p><\/div>

If he were around to ask, Capote would likely concede he wasn\u2019t knocking the (after all, essential) act of typing; rather, he was pointing out that putting words on the page isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>

To attain to polished prose, one has to spend a lot of time taking them off again.<\/p>

This is anathema to a lot of writers. Even experienced ones. Even, apparently, Kerouac.<\/p>

But it is the easiest way I know to sharpen one\u2019s prose and communicate efficiently, which is, in the end, the whole point of this writing malarky. <\/p>

Without further ado, your first quick fix. <\/p>

Redundant personal pronouns<\/h1>

  • Where it\u2019s found: Largely first-person writing such as essays, applications, emails, etc<\/em><\/p><\/li>

  • How it happens: Writers are overly concerned about clarity, or inattentive<\/em><\/p><\/li>

  • Why delete? They add clutter, not meaning<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    1. when I joined my high school \u2013 this is a simple subject + verb + object sentence; there is no reason to specify \u2018my\u2019 as the grammar makes it axiomatic\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

      Edit options: upon entering high school<\/em> or when I started high school<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

      1. I glanced into the darkness ahead of me \u2013 again, this is a SVO sentence where the subject\/object relationship is crystalline, making \u2018of me\u2019 pointless<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

        Edit options: I glanced into the gloom ahead<\/em> or I looked into the darkness ahead<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

        1. I spent ample time brushing up on my theory \u2013 the pronoun here is unnecessary and implies something which untrue: the writer is studying other people\u2019s theories, therefore \u2018my theory\u2019 is misleading\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

          Edit options: I brushed up on theory <\/em>or I studied theory<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

          1. he had a boss at his work \u2013 he could hardly have a boss at someone else\u2019s work<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

            Edit options: he had a boss at work<\/em> or he had a boss<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>

            1. I discovered for myself \u2013 the first-person subject pronoun makes it clear who made the discovery, the reflexive \u2018for myself\u2019 is redundant<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

              Edit option: I discovered<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

              Practice tip<\/h2>

              Pull up a couple of documents you\u2019ve written recently \u2014 email, school report, work proposal, whatever. <\/p>

              Save a copy, so you have the original, then ctrl+f delete <\/em>starting with personal pronouns. <\/p>

              If you haven\u2019t any strays, congratulate yourself, if you have remove them. <\/p>

              Next week, repeat with the next tip.<\/p>

              Keep that up for five weeks and see how much your original writing has transformed.<\/p>
