{"id":163640515,"date":"2025-05-17T12:40:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T12:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/supporting-gifted-students\/"},"modified":"2025-05-17T12:40:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T12:40:48","slug":"supporting-gifted-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/de\/supporting-gifted-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Gifted Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping exceptional students excel <\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why do some intellectually exceptional students fail to excel?<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our hyper-mechanistic, Social Darwinian culture tends to assume \u2014 ignoring millennia of evidence \u2014 that the race is to the swift and the battle to the strong. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet we see power held by the patently unfit and riches accruing to people whose primary skill was being in the right place at the right time. <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>There is no predictable correlation (much less causation) between talent and success.<\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, some gifted students become highly rewarded adults. But that involves numerous factors, most of them unrelated to ability.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plenty of exceptional young people wind up with lives that don\u2019t adequately, or at all, reflect what they may be capable of \u2014 intellectually, professionally or emotionally.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1454923634634-bd1614719a7b?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMTh8fHdvcmt8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzQ3MzAxMDA3fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"people walking on grey concrete floor during daytime\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cwarnckewriter.com\/2023\/07\/18\/on-hyperlexia\/\">previous post on hyperlexia<\/a>, a form of giftedness strongly correlated with autism spectrum condition, exceptional ability in one area can mask struggles elsewhere, particularly in executive function and social-emotional development. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, precocious students, with or without additional challenges, are often underserved. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finn, Jr. (2014) <a href=\"http:\/\/k12accountability.org\/resources\/Gifted-Education\/Finn_Underserved_GT_Students.pdf\">noted<\/a>:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIn New York City in 2013, almost 12,000 kids qualified for the school system\u2019s 2,700 \u201cgifted\u2026\u201d openings. The same year, Ohio schools identified 254,000 gifted children\u2026 however, Ohio public schools can accommodate only one in five of these \u201cidentified\u201d youngsters in gifted-education programs or accelerated classrooms.<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mismatches between student need and educational provision can spark misery, mischief or mediocrity.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1516042438821-0abd7a73c4b3?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyMHx8Y2hpbGQlMjBzdHVkZW50fGVufDB8fHx8MTc0NzQ4NDQ2MHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"selective focus photography of girl\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some teachers loved my precocious linguistic capabilities and made me a pet; to others, I was opinionated, disruptive, disrespectful. A few were cool and confident enough to see and appreciate my specialness without fawning or feeling threatened.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least that\u2019s how I saw it as a student.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a teacher, I empathize with them all: it\u2019s hard not to flatter, or be flattered by, an exceptional student (the temptation to take credit is the fruit of the tree of no-knowledge); it\u2019s equally difficult not to be annoyed by tweens and teens who see themselves as the sole repository of the world\u2019s wisdom. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers in the third category weren\u2019t just cool and confident, they were skilled educators who had the knowledge, time and resources to offer differentiated instruction: privileges not widely nor equitably distributed. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1524178232363-1fb2b075b655?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNnx8dGVhY2hpbmd8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzQ3MzgxNjI3fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"a group of people in a room with a projector screen\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> In any class larger than one-to-one, a teacher has to weigh students\u2019 non-synonymous needs, interests and abilities. Differentiated instruction is overwhelming with more than a handful of learners\u2014 and many of teachers have 25-30 pupils in a class. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Differentiation means preparing distinct materials which have to be taught, assessed and integrated into the larger curriculum goals. Differentiating in a class is effectively teaching multiple classes with the time, energy and resources allocated for one.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t blame teachers who are unable or unwilling to this. It is an unreasonable expectation in even a privileged classroom, and a wholly unrealistic one in the context of public education. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1654860687488-119a90eafa86?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw4N3x8dHV0b3Jpbmd8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzQ3NDg0NjQ1fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"a person and a child looking at a book\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One-to-one tutoring is an option that is often considered primarily for students who struggle academically; for them, the benefits of focused attention, support and feedback are axiomatic.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consciously or not, educators and parents might assume that gifted students won\u2019t benefit in the same way, that they will \u2018figure it out\u2019. However, there is research to show that high achievers actually benefit <em>more<\/em> from one-to-one tuition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10494820.2021.1958234?src=recsys\">Zhang, et al. (2021)<\/a> found that, while all students in a tutoring study improved, \u201chigh prior knowledge students tended to benefit more\u2026 than low prior knowledge students.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On reflection, this shouldn\u2019t be surprising. Talented athletes, musicians and artists thrive on intensive, personalize, expert tuition.
