{"id":143813051,"date":"2024-04-23T07:01:08","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T07:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/lets-teach-kindness\/"},"modified":"2024-04-23T07:01:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T07:01:08","slug":"lets-teach-kindness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writetosuccess.net\/de\/lets-teach-kindness\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#039;s Teach Kindness"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why animal welfare education matters for kids<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1531580032505-dbc2f398287e?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw2MXx8a2lkJTIwYW5pbWFsfGVufDB8fHx8MTcxMzcxOTA0MHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080\" alt=\"girl feeding flock of swan and geese on body of water during daytime\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 2022, I read about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/25\/the-littlest-rat-catchers-new-zealand-schoolchildren-trap-and-kill-600-pests-in-100-days\">New Zealand children being taught to trap and kill rats<\/a>. The story has nagged me ever since.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child killers were ostensibly working towards the laudable goal of protecting native fauna.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I have a hard time with is the gleeful tone of the kids, and adults, involved (quoted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/25\/the-littlest-rat-catchers-new-zealand-schoolchildren-trap-and-kill-600-pests-in-100-days\">McClure, 2022<\/a>):<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><p>\u201cMy trap, basically the whole thing\u2019s a layer of blood,\u201d grins one enthusiastic vermin-slayer.\u201d<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u201cEven the five-year-olds are really into the idea. They know the end goal: they want kiwis back in their back yards,\u201d said Emma Jenkinson, chair of the school\u2019s board of trustees, who helped organise the competition.\u201d<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do the five-year-olds really want kiwis back in their yards? Or are they learning a dangerous lesson?<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching cruelty<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research beginning in the 1960s has found consistent strong links between childhood animal cruelty and adult interpersonal violence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0160252716300309\">Holoyda &amp; Newman, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/r.jordan.im\/download\/psychology\/gleyzer2002.pdf\">Glayzer, et al., 2002<\/a>).<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is so well-established, Holoyda and Newman (2016) note, that: \u201cCruelty to animals entered the\u00a0<em>Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders<\/em>\u00a0in the revised third edition (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) as a criterion for conduct disorder, the childhood precursor to antisocial personality disorder.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s <em>rats<\/em>, you may say. <em>Vermin<\/em>.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rats \u2014 like it or not \u2014 are living creatures capable of feeling pain.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, 2023 New Zealand was prepared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-65320162\">offer children under 14 cash prizes for killing \u2018feral\u2019 cats<\/a>. Fortunately there was enough public outcry to force the organizers to rescind the reward.<\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>My point is, the category of <em>vermin<\/em> is dangerously prone to expansion.<\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a hallmark of genocide that perpetrators classify the objects of their violence as pestilential, invasive, repulsive.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIn the apocalyptic Nazi vision, these putative enemies of civilization [Jews] were represented as parasitic organisms \u2014 as leeches, lice, bacteria, or vectors of contagion,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/03\/29\/134956180\/criminals-see-their-victims-as-less-than-human\">writes David Livingston Smith<\/a>, author of <em>Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others<\/em>. He also notes that during the genocide in Rawanda Hutus referred to their Tutsi victims as \u201ccockroaches.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, I am NOT equating killing rats or cats with killing humans. That would be absurd and offensive.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I AM arguing is that humans can be conditioned to treat other living creatures with regard, or the opposite, and that training children to delight in the death and suffering of any living being paves the way for insensitivity to other living beings.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we teach kids it\u2019s okay to torment and kill one animal, what\u2019s to stop the category of <em>vermin<\/em> expanding? Again, numerous studies across more than half a century have found strong correlations between childhood animal cruelty and adult violence.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.unsplash.com\/reserve\/1hyDEofHQ0OX1mRnvhqw_IMG_1324.jpg?w=1080&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"person feeding goat\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking responsibility<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another problematic fact of the New Zealand slaughter campaigns (at least as reported) is the lack of acknowledgement of how the problem started.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither cats nor rats are native to New Zealand, and they didn\u2019t swim there. Humans brought rats to the islands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/24053665\">Innes, et al., 1995<\/a>), and doubtless brought cats to kill the rats, in nursery rhyme fashion.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If anyone is to blame for endangering native fauna, it is the people who arrived with these animals. It may be necessary and appropriate to take protective measures now, but any engagement children have with the issue should be framed in terms of human responsibility for the initial problem.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that adults need to deal with the situation instead of outsourcing killing to children. If culling seems the only way to protect endangered native species it should be done as humanely as possible by trained adult professionals.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal welfare education<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educators and parents can, and should, educate children about animal welfare. <\/p><div class=\"pullquote\"><p>At this point in human history, it is less about kindness than about a last-gasp chance to save ourselves from self-inflicted environmental meltdown.<\/p><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot slow the headlong rush to planet-scale destruction by continuing with the same mindset that got us into it \u2014 the mindset that says: when an animal (or plant, or person) inconveniences us, let\u2019s call them <em>a pest<\/em> and kill them.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educating children to treat other living beings and ecosystems with respect and consideration is a step towards self-preservation, in the immediate and (if we\u2019re lucky) long term.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediate impacts include reducing interpersonal violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabdirect.org\/cabdirect\/abstract\/20123343503\">Scheib, Roeper and Hametter<\/a> (2010) found that children who taught about animal welfare, \u201cacquire social competences such as empathy, consideration, and responsibilities. Thus, Animal Welfare Education plays an important role in preventing violence in schools.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-2615\/10\/1\/43\">Tarazona, Ceballos and Broom (2020)<\/a> argue for far-reaching benefits to animal welfare education, writing: <\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe basic concepts of biology, welfare, and health are the same for humans and all other animals. Human actions have wide consequences and we need to change the way we interact with other living beings. \u2026 Animal welfare should always be considered in our relationships with animals, not only for direct impacts, e.g., manipulations, but also for indirect effects, e.g., on the environment, disease spread, natural resource availability, culture, and society.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interdisciplinary connections<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid this outcome, teachers in all disciplines need to participate.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As long as environmental or animal-related topics are confined to science classes, they will remain easy for students to compartmentalize. And a thing that can be compartmentalized can be ignored most of the time.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can I do, as an English teacher?<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For starters, I can highlight relevant themes in texts. A text I love to teacher is Doris Lessing\u2019s striking debut novel <em>The Grass is Singing<\/em>, a book in which the physical environment plays an outsized role in the social, emotional and psychological environment. It explicitly deals with themes like land exploitation, too, and highlighting them has initiated thoughtful discussions.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also draw on authors like Henry David Thoreau, Charles Darwin and Margaret Mead.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History class is another fantastic place to educate students about the environment. We should consider and highlight the impact of social change, war, technology, etc. on animals and the wider environment.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Math teachers can use problems that engage with the natural world, ranging from population expansion to epidemiology.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children who don\u2019t understand that all life is fundamentally connected will grow into adults who won\u2019t see how their actions and choices affect their environment. They will be, in a profound sense, irresponsible.
