I\u2019m a professional writer and educator with more than 25 years of combined writing, editing, coaching and teaching experience. I work online with gifted, sensitive, twice-exceptional and neurodivergent students from all over the world, helping them turn strong ideas into clear, structured writing\u2014and develop the confidence to show what they\u2019re capable of.<\/p>\n
I also know what it\u2019s like to be one of those students. That\u2019s the long version.<\/p>\n
I started school at age 12. Before that, I was an unschooled home-schooler. My education was the 1968 World Book Encyclopedia (minus K, so I couldn\u2019t spout state facts along with my discourses on Thoroughbred bloodlines), plus weekly trips to the library.<\/p>\n
These excursions fueled my hyperlexia and fanned my curiosity; after sweeping through the children\u2019s section, I scooped up Nobel Prize winners, P. G. Wodehouse, and anything related to dogs. Yet I found UNO perplexing and kids my age equal parts puzzling and alarming.<\/p>\n
That didn\u2019t change at school. My 99th-percentile reading and writing abilities masked my challenges with executive function, emotional regulation and STEM subjects; my teachers didn\u2019t understand why I made things so difficult, and neither did I.<\/p>\n
Although my grades and test scores gained me admission to the University of Pennsylvania, gaps in my academic and social skills dogged me. My path to a BA in English Literature was far more circuitous and painful than it needed to be, and along the way I missed resources and opportunities that would not return.<\/p>\n
This trajectory taught me three things that shape everything I do:<\/p>\n
First: being gifted in one or more areas does not mean a young person doesn\u2019t need support in others; the assumption that \u201cthey\u2019re smart; they\u2019ll figure it out\u201d is wrong and damaging.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Second: the skills that turn ideas into finished work\u2014planning, sequencing, starting, structuring, finishing\u2014can be learned. Not wished into existence, not shamed into existence: learned, with the right support.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Third: intelligent, high-potential and high-achieving learners may be silently struggling with perfectionism, insecurity or feelings of difference. Supportive, attuned adults can make a huge difference in how they experience education and in their long-term self-confidence and success.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
After Penn, I spent more than two decades as a journalist, author and editor. Writing is my vocation, my craft, my trade: I know what a deadline feels like from the inside, what it takes to wrestle a first draft into shape, and what grabs editors, examiners and admissions readers.<\/p>\n
Alongside writing, I have spent more than a decade teaching in schools in the United States, Britain, Spain and France, and added an MA in Education to my Master\u2019s in Creative Writing.<\/p>\n
Each aspect of my life\u2014teaching, writing, personal experience\u2014informs my work with gifted, sensitive, unconventional learners. I know, and have seen again and again, how a malformed system or unsuitable methodology can derail a bright young mind, and I am committed to offering an alternative.<\/p>\n
The most brilliant minds deserve the most support.<\/strong> Our culture assumes talent is a golden ticket: that a bright student should sail through with minimal help, and that if they don\u2019t, something is wrong with them.<\/p>\n I believe the opposite. Every capable student deserves support that matches their needs and abilities, not a one-size-fits-all approach.<\/p>\n In practice, that means:<\/strong><\/p>\n When bright students struggle, the damage isn\u2019t limited to grades. They may start to internalize negative assessments: lazy, careless, not trying. These labels can shadow a person for decades.<\/p>\n I know because I\u2019ve been on both the kid who couldn\u2019t do the thing, and the teacher watching a student light up when they figure out the thing.<\/p>\n A student can be highly intelligent and struggle to produce work that reflects it. High intellect bogged down by low self-esteem is not a character flaw: it\u2019s a solvable problem of fit between a student\u2019s learning profile and the support they\u2019re getting.<\/p>\n Fixing that fit is the most satisfying work I\u2019ve ever done. For some students, the transformation is sharper critical thinking, a deeper love of literature, or the ability to tackle previously daunting academic objectives.
